NorthStar Games ~ Say Anything

Last year I was introduced to North Star Games when our family was blessed with Wits and Wagers Family to review. We have played that game over and over, inviting friends and family to join us, laughing and having a wonderful time with it.

When we had the opportunity to review another game by North Star, I knew we were in for more fun and laughs!

Say Anything just sounds fun, doesn’t it?

Say Anything Family Edition from North Star Games retails for $19.99, and can be found at various online and retail stores.

It is recommended for ages 8+, but my 5 year old easily played with us with help when it was his turn to read the questions. Speaking of questions, there are 60 question cards with 360 topics on front and back of the cards.

You need at least 3 people to play, but there are setups for 6 players including dry erase boards, pens and two color-coordinated tokens for each player.

Included with the game is a nice full color set of rules.

Setup and Game Play~

Each player gets a Dry Erase Pen, and Answer Board, and 2 Player Tokens of the same color as their Answer Board. You’ll also need some napkins to wipe off your answers in between questions (fingers leave oily residue).

Choose a Score Keeper. This player will write down the scores after each round. The Score Keeper gets the Score Board.

The first player gets the SELECT-O-MATIC 6000, and is the Judge for the round. The Judge does not write an answer for the turn, but instead draws a question card and asks one of the questions.  Everyone else write an answer on their Answer Board and places it face-up on the table.

Once all the Answer Boards are face-up on the table, the Judge will use the SELECT-O-MATIC 6000 to secretly choose her favorite answer, and puts the SELCET-O-MATIC 6000 face-down on the table.

Next, everyone except the Judge uses their 2 player tokens to guess which answer the Judge picked. They can either place both player tokens on the same answer, or split their player tokens between 2 different answers. They don’t have to choose their own answer.

Once the player tokens have been placed, the Judge reveals her favorite answer by turning the SELECT-O-MATIC 6000 face-up.

*Players get 1 point for each player token they placed on the answer that was selected.

*The player who wrote the selected answer gets 1 bonus point

*The Judge gets 1 point for each player token placed on the answer she selected.

After erasing answers from the boards (with napkins, not fingers :)), the question cards and SELECT-O-MATIC 6000 are passed to the new Judge on the left for the next round.

The game is over once everyone has asked 2 questions. The player with the most points win unless there is a ties, then all of the tying players win :)).

When we played, we just kept playing until someone had filled all of the slots on the score board.

We had a blast playing Say Anything Family! This game is just hilarious, and once we played a few rounds, the competition really got heated as we began to get really creative thinking of answers that would catch the judge’s eye. This game really brings the little inside jokes, family funnies, and individual tastes to the table. It’s definitely a great way to get to know each other better!

I must admit I had a bit of an advantage when answering What’s the best breakfast cereal? After all, I do remember which cereal each kid asks for that I have to say, “No that’s not good for you, choose something else.”

Now I wasn’t very good at guessing Which book character would I most want to hang out with? If Levi would have been the Judge on that one, I think I could have racked up some points, but the girls share their literary and movie character discussions without me many times- so I had to go with a different strategy on these kind of questions. I just placed my tokens on the answer of the person who I thought shared this topic best with the given Judge.

And sometimes, we all just got so silly we had to catch our breath before resuming the game. One incident in particular that probably won’t elicit the same reaction with my readers as it did with my family was when the question What’s the best song ever? was asked. Now the Judge for this question was my 14 year old whose iPod earplugs have permanently grown into her ears, and I began laboriously thinking through some of her favorite songs. And then the funniest thought came to mind. Most of our pets here at Gunn Ranch have their own song. Yep, I know that’s kinda weird, but they all have their own little personalities, and they all have a song. So my answer to this question was a little song that we all sing to Grace, our horse. When I set my card with “The Gracers Gracers of Mine” written on it down in the middle of the table, we all just busted out in laughter. Of course once we recovered, all the tokens were placed on that answer! And when the SELECT-O-MATIC 6000 was turned face-up, sure enough that was the one chosen.

There were many answers along the way that were silly and quite creative.

From What would I do if I won a $100,000 lottery,

to Which superhero outfit looks the most uncomfortable,

to What’s the best thing about being a dog, we laughed ourselves silly as we played this game!

So who won? It was a toss up. We played so many times I can’t even remember, but I think everyone had the chance to win at least once.

This game gets five thumbs up from my Army of 5!

With Christmas just around the corner- this game, or any of the other cool games by North Star would certainly be a hit for anyone looking for something unique and fun! (I didn’t see the regular version of Say Anything, so I’m not sure of the content of those questions.)

Check out my Crew Mates adventures with Say Anything over at the Crew Blog!

*I received this game as a Crew Mate on the TOS Homeschool Crew for review purposes. No other compensation was received, and opinions and laughs are our own.
