With the beginning of a new learning season upon us, I was greatly blessed by a timely and encouraging resource which has boldly taken me by the hand and said, “Come-on, let’s do this thing!”
As Apologia Educational Ministries has continued to provide rock solid curriculum and valuable support and encouragement to the homeschool and parenting communities, they have filled my own treasure box with many precious jewels.
The latest encouragement I speak of is a beautiful little shiney hardback book called How to Have a H.E.A.R.T. For Your Kids by Rachael Carman.
In case you’re wondering what the H.E.A.R.T. stands for like I did when I first saw the title, I’ll fill you in on this slick little acronym:
Chapter 1: H– Have a Heart for the Things of God
Chapter 2: E– Enrich Your Marriage
Chapter 3: A– Accept Your Kids
Chapter 4: R– Release Them to God
Chapter 5: T– Teach Them the Truth
~How well do you really know your kids? What has God shown you about who they are and who they will become? He has sent these children into your home at this specific time for His glorious purposes. Indeed, you have been invited on the adventure of a lifetime, a journey on which you will see walls fall, seas parted, and giants slain. You don’t need special skills or training for this journey—you need only to seek God and hold tight to His mighty hand! As with so many things, the first step to having a heart for your children is knowing your heavenly Father. As you seek daily to share His heart for your children, keep this inspirational book close at hand.
From my heart to yours:
This little book packs a powerful punch.
Or should I say this little book is like a delightfully warm shower at 5 am?
Or maybe a scrumptious cup of carmel-espresso latte mid-afternoon?
Before you start thinking “I probably don’t need this book, I already have a heart for my kids, after all, I’m homeschooling, aren’t I?” let me just share that was my first thought when I read the title.
Or maybe you aren’t a homeschooling parent at all, but none-the-less have read to this point of my review. (Thanks, by the way *big grin*)
Whatever has brought you to consider this book, might I just say it’s well worth your time and energy. In peeking into the life of this precious family through the eyes of the author and mother, we are privy to some pretty rich insight and magnificent blessings that God bestowed upon their family journey.
And I believe with all of my heart, mind, soul and strength that He wants to bestow this very same rich insight and magnificent blessings upon YOUR journey as well.
I felt a strong connection and sense of validation as I was reading and relating to Rachael’s story. I laughed out loud, and truly wanted to cry in some places from a realization that I’m not alone. There’s someone else out there who struggles and delights and cries and gets overwhelmed and rejoices and loves and hurts and gets discouraged at times, falling to her knees, then fixing her eyes on Jesus and getting right back up.
Rachael not only has a heart for her kids and family, but also has a heart for others as she generously shares what God has taught and shown her. She has a remarkable way of putting thoughts and experiences into words.
I would recommend this book to parents of all ages, shapes, sizes and stages of parenting out there- guarantee it will change your perspective and encourage you in your journey.
As for me, I will be re-visiting this little jewel often throughout this learning season, and probably until my last one graduates. I just need to buy a few extra copies so I’m not tempted to lend it out! 🙂
