It’s been about ten months since our Equine 102 class. I was all prepared to post about our wonderful progress with Grace when I realized that the last post in December 2009 was when we first sat on and walked Grace !!
So let’s back up to August, 2010 here when we completed our round pen and began to work Grace in there. Progress in the round pen went quite rapidly because this filly is eager to have someone on her back! Our main problem has NOT been her bucking and being too wild, but NOT wanting to walk. Once we got her moving, she had no problem stopping with a whoa, turning, responding in mostly the proper ways to the cues we give her.
We found she worked nicely with someone on the ground to urge her on.
Morgan worked her with help from Taylor teaming up on Lee.
One of the most exciting nights of my life was riding Grace myself. Daniel and I have both ridden her. (Sorry, no pics LOL.)
After a few weeks of consistent work in the round pen, it began to rain and between the bad weather and mud, Grace had a pretty long break between workouts. She was only worked in the roundpen a half-dozen times since September between the bad weather, and conditioning Napoleon for the 4-H horse show. But the poor filly would always cry when Lee was taken out, and would eagerly watch as he was being worked around the barrels.
So it was Saturday after we returned from the horse show in high spirits that Grace had her chance. Taylor decided it was now or never, saddled her up, took her to the round pen, and after she behaved beautifully there, decided it was time to ride free on ranch. Grace did well and just had the most precious look on her face when Tayt rode her up to the front of the house and had us come out to greet them!!
Morgan then mounted Grace while Taylor ran to get Lee and the two girls rode off on their horses for their first trail ride around the property.
Patience, love and kisses. That’s what makes a dream come true. 🙂
