factsfirst is an online math program designed to help students develop fluency in basic math facts.
This program is good for children needing to get a better foundation and quicker recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. This program is full of brightly colored animation.
To begin with, the student creates their own character avatar to represent them through the gaming process.
After viewing an introductory lesson to get oriented to the program, the student then works through the different parts of the lesson which include:
~new facts (two new facts per unit are introduced to be mastered before moving to another unit)
Once completing a lesson, the student is rewarded with a trip to the arcade where they may choose between one of five different games to play for five minutes before moving on to the next lesson. Consequently, this "fun time" is still reenforcing those math facts!
A nice touch to this program is that the student and parents can view progress and performance on the Math Fact Matrix. This overview of performance is weighed based on speed, frequency, and other indicators of proficiency.
How did my students like this? Well, at this point in the review year we’ve been through lots of math programs. They gave this program a 3.5 out of 5 stars. They thought the actual program worked well to review the facts, but wasn’t as much "fun" as other ones they have tried. They did like the arcade idea. There weren’t as many rewards for achievement to boost them on to the next level as other programs. They felt this program would appeal greatly to younger elementary aged students, as the characters, design and layout appears to be geared for younger children.
