Keyboarding for the Christian School is a typing curriculum written by Leanne Beitel in an effort to offer a quality keyboarding program with Christian content. As a teacher in the private sector, she found the need to develop a suitable curriculum which demonstrated proper touch-typing methods, offered MLA and APA report formatting, and had Biblical-based references and material for students to copy. As she began working on combining elements needed to satisfy both state education and private school requirements, Christian Keyboarding was formed.
We’ve looked at a few typing programs in the past, but I haven’t really ever officially added them to our schooldays to complete. My girls are very quick on the keyboard, but fingers are not in the correct position, and I have discussed with them in the past that at some point we need to go through a typing program to teach them the proper finger positions, because in the long run once your fingers and mind are used to the proper way it really is much easier and one is able to type much more fluently. In today’s world of computers and technology, I believe it’s imperative that all children know how to properly use the keyboard.
I was really happy to receive Keyboarding for the Christian School for Morgan to use.
This program for 6th grade and up consists of 43 lessons. The first 20 lessons consist of learning alphabetic keys, and appear pretty much like any other typing program, just like I learned from. The exception here is that once the student begins typing practice sentences they aren’t silly mindless phrases, but Biblical scriptures or phrases. After the alphabetic keys, numbers and symbol keys are learned, things such as centering, tab key, MLA and APA reports, cover pages, bibliography, personal & business letters, envelopes, proofreader’s marks, timing scale, tables, and other topics are also covered. You can view the complete table of contents on the homepage at Christian Keyboarding dot com.
Not only was I happy to be able to review the regular typing program, but I was doubly blessed with an elementary version!! Taylor was thrilled to have her own work to do.
The elementary version consists of 32 lessons designed for Grades K-5, and teaches the basics of learning keyboarding starting with alphabetic keys in lessons 1-20. lessons 21-25 teach numbers and symbol keys, lessons 26-29 number pad, lesson 30 is on centering, lesson 31 enumerated lists, lesson 32 is timed writings.
So how did these typing programs work for our family?
Well, I printed off the lessons from the pdf files we received. Since we are using file-folder boxes twice weekly for independent study, these lessons work perfectly. I borrowed an idea from a fellow crewmate and have my girls open up their personal email accounts and type the lesson into an email to send to me for review. They both have commented that they are enjoying the lessons, and when I ask if they are placing fingers in the proper positions, they mention that it is taking them awhile longer than they expected to cover the lessons due to getting used to proper finger placement. Once weekly I sit with them through a lesson to make sure fingers are being placed properly. We will definitely be using these programs in their entirety!
I would definitely recommend this program to anyone wanting a basic typing program with Christian content to type for practice lessons.
