"Aww, not another math program," my  12 year old daughter said when I told her we were going to review Mathletics, an online curriculum-based math community for students K-8.

But her mind was quickly changed when she saw her sister creating a unique avatar, much like some of the gamesites she loves to play on. As we explored further into the brightly colored and well-organized website, it didn’t take long to learn that there is a store where different features can be purchased to add to your avatar from the points you earn while answering questions. They were also really excited about competing with other kids throughout the US and world. This live interaction with kids of the same age and ability from all over the world was really a selling point for the 12 year old.

While the 9 year old really enjoyed the live challenges, she was really impressed by the look and feel of the website in general. She felt the animated screens explained problems very well, and I found her advancing through skills rather quickly with this program.

My favorite parts of Mathletics?

* Well, my girls LOVE it!

*Student’s daily progress can be tracked, and parent can be updated with weekly emails.

*Immediate feedback to responses with step-by-step animated support, explaining concepts very well.

*Student can work at their own pace, with questions getting harder as they improve, which really helps reinforce concepts to memory as well as imparting confidence!

* Lots of rewards, certificates, and confidence builders for progress!

*No actual communication between students makes this a safe environment for all ages!

* There are some great workbooks that you can print to reinforce what they are learning (not available for all levels yet).

* Website is very user-friendly, and animations are colorful and organized, yet not over-stimulating.

I was just thoroughly surprised when my oldest daughter spent several hours on Mathletics, excited to see her "world status" increasing. Both girls asked if we could renew for a year subscription, and even offered to replace another favorite gamesite subscription (that she pays for herself) with Mathletics!

Now there’s some shining evidence of an outstanding product!

This product is used all over the world in classrooms, but is very useful for homeschools as well. They even have a Homeschool Brochure you can download for more information on how to incorporate this into your homeschool. It is essentially a supplemental program for drill practice, so a core math program is needed. It does, however, have great explanations of how problems are worked, so it reinforces learned concepts well, and the best part is, it makes math FUN!

1 + 1 = 2 X 3 = 6 – 2 = 4 + 1 = 5 X 0 = 0 + 7 = 7

Right now, a one-year subscription is $59.00 per child, but if you know the Human Calculator’s favorite number (9) you can get it for $49.95 per child until January. There is a 10 day money-back guarantee (but I’m pretty confident you won’t be needing that, LOL)

Chris

I was given a 45 day subscription to Mathletics as a member of the TOS Crew for review purposes. No other compensation was received, and opinions in this blog post are my own.
